The collaboration between tcc – The Connoisseur Concerto with award winning Singaporean contemporary art and design collective :phunk studio and art-management.com will see the artists’ framed A4 portraits go on sale at $199. 100 per cent of the proceeds will benefit the non-profit TRANSMISSION: PROJECT, an annual experimental incubator platform founded by :phunk studio.

I was lucky enough to be a part of

a recent community-based project.

In a nutshell:

to manufacture a series of 5 mini figures

akin to the 2 inch tall M.U.S.C.L.E & Monsters In My Pocket lines

from the 80s and 90s

what manifested: OMFG! [Outlandish Mini Figure Guys] series 1

my contribution: the Crawdad Kid

This project originated from the talented group of artists, designers & toy enthusiasts

from the October Toys/Toy Break forum.

Over the course of several months,

dozens of character ideas were submitted & voted on to be put into production.

Now, this project has reached its funding stage.

This piece is an exploration in choice and freewill;

how human agency affects us on a personal level

and its resultant implications.

The work represents a process of self-discovery -

a semiotic entity can hold meanings with opposing significance,

which is entirely relative to an individual's viewpoint.

What lies in the middle of these two extremes,

while seemingly neutral,

in actuality manifests itself as a chaotic mess.

Is there always refuge in going with the middle ground?

This body of work addresses the concept of identity, and questions the commonly held assumptions about stereotypes and self-awareness. The medium and imagery of gas masks draw on the symbolism and aesthetics of youth culture, and also deal with sameness and difference between selves. The traditional headdresses contain faint intimations concerning cultural personality. This resonance of cultural identity, being based upon difference, presents itself as a divisive force in society. The concluding image suggests that cosmopolitanism provides individuals with a greater sense of shared citizenship, presenting the ideology of belonging to a single community. Ergo, to not always be divisive. As individuals, we share an inherent part of “make up” that provides a common ground and alternate means of identifying with each other.
